First Aid At Work All employers have obligations under the 1981 First Aid in the Workplace legislation to provide adequate First Aid cover for employees. What qualifies as “adequate” should be assessed by a needs review of the workplace bearing in mind number of employees, size of workplace, how potentially dangerous are the work activities, is there shift work etc. Workplace First Aiders are required to be appropriately qualified and the legislation recognises are 4 different types of certified courses:
First Aid at Work - a 3 Day course which covers the full range of skills required by a nominated First Aider. The certificate once achieved is valid for 3 years. First Aid at Work Requalification - after 3 years a fully qualified First Aider can be requalified with a shortened 2 Day course, if the course completed within 28 days of the original certificates expiry. Emergency First Aid at Work - a 1 Day course aimed at those supporting a fully qualified First Aider and which covers the most urgent and time critical First Aid skills. This certificate is also valid for 3 years. Annual Refresher - whilst not an obligation, it is recommended that all First Aiders in the workplace attend an annual, 4 hour course to ensure knowledge and skills retention between 3 year retraining.
